Winter Makeup Tips

With fluctuating winter temps, your skin pays a price and your daily makeup routine may not be helping.  While it sounds a little “extra” to have a winter routine, your skin with thank you-and your makeup will look even better.  Below, we share a few tips and products that can help!

1. Ditch the powder

While a  lot of new makeup users inevitably gravitate to the tried and true bareMinerals original, loose, mineral powders they may not be the best for you if your skin is perpetually dry, or gets dull in the winter.  Instead opt for one of their liquid foundations to add the hydration your skin needs.

A great alternative to full coverage “cake” is this tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier.

Available in three formulas, it packs a big punch with. healthy dose of good for your skin ingredients.  Choose from Demi-matte, illuminating, or natural  finish.

THE PERFECT BLEND

HydrationTinted Moisturizer is powered with sodium hyaluronate to hydrate skin and soften fine, dry lines. Available in three lightweight formulas and perfect for all skin types, even sensitive ones.

SPF ProtectionTinted Moisturizer provides ideal protection from the sun’s harmful, damaging rays with broad spectrum SPF 20 UVB/UVA sunscreen while the color stays true and wears evenly.

Vitamins C and ETinted Moisturizer features an antioxidant vitamin complex of vitamins C and E that protects
the skin from even the most aggressive effects of the environment.

PRO TIP: For everyday makeup on dry skin, it is perfectly acceptable to forgo “setting” with a powder over liquid  foundation.

Even your favorite powdered blush can look a little
lackluster.  Emollient blushes have been
around a long time, but are not as popular.  Our favorite is Glossier Cloud Paint. Easy to use,
and gorgeous luminous pigment! SO GOOD.  Save brush cleaning time,  and blend with your fingers.  Cushiony gel-cream formula is buildable and stays true all day.  Great options for all skin tones also!

2. Prep your skin & lips

Regardless of the foundation and primers you choose for your daily makeup, your skin needs love.  Even more so in the winter.  Facial oils are a mainstay in our personal makeup bags as well as our pro kits.  Even oily skin needs love in harsh weather.  With the right products, you can actually help regulate oil production.  The better balanced your skin, the less oil it will produce.

Here’s a great one for oily skins, HERBIVORE Lapis Oil Balancing Facial Oil.  Hydrating, clarifying and balancing, this oil is perfect for combating redness, blemishes and refining pores for oily, combination and oily skin.  This is gorgeous under makeup.  No junk, no filler, 100% luxurious goodness that works beautifully.

-Blue Tansy: Reduces redness and clarifies the complexion without drying; contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
-Plant-based Squalane: Acts as a natural protective barrier to keep moisture in the skin, while protecting skin from hyper-pigmentation and premature aging.
-Kukui Nut Oil: Balances sebum and oil production in oilier and blemish-prone skin types with high levels of linoleic acid; provides hydration and nourishmen.
-Jojoba Oil: Moisturizes.

One of the most gorgeous and effective face oils in the winter rotation is drunk elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil.  This should be a holy grail for dull, dry, winter skin.  Suitable for all skin types, even sensitive skin (pure, raw ingredients untouched by chemicals to fragrance).  The anti-oxidant packed formula absorbs quickly and leaves a beautiful glow-not at all greasy.  Fine lines, blotchiness, wrinkles, redness all diminished.

Pro Tip:  Use on under eye area before applying concealer for fine line free flawlessness.

Matte lips are a go to for winter looks, but even the creamiest matte lip products will leave your lips thirsty, and looking beyond dry.  Not Cute.  Consider an emollient lip balm as a primer and use to touch up along with your lipstick during the day.  The trick is to find one that is hydrating but acts as a primer by filling in dry lip lines for a flawless lipstick application.  A great option and fave for us is First Aid Beauty Lip Balm.  This formula is not too “slippery” so its perfect for application prior to lip liner and matte lipsticks.  Love FAB!
